Burning firewood that keeps your flue cleaner

Choosing the right firewood can make a significant difference in how clean your chimney flue stays. Here’s what you need to know.

Select Properly Seasoned Wood

Using properly seasoned wood is crucial for keeping your flue cleaner. Seasoned wood is wood that has been dried for at least six months; it contains less moisture and burns more efficiently. Wet or 'green' wood produces more smoke and creosote, which can accumulate in your chimney.

When selecting firewood, look for pieces with cracks on the ends, which indicate drying. Properly seasoned wood will also be lighter in weight and produce a clearer sound when knocked together. These are simple checks that can help you choose wood that will burn cleaner.

Types of Wood to Consider

Hardwoods like oak, maple, and birch are excellent choices for cleaner burning. They burn at a higher temperature and produce less creosote than softwoods. Although hardwoods might take longer to season, their long, even burn is worth the wait in terms of efficiency and cleanliness.

Softwoods, such as pine, burn quickly and are great for kindling but are often not ideal for regular burning due to higher sap and resin content. These can lead to increased creosote buildup, requiring more frequent chimney cleanings. Mixing hardwood with a small amount of softwood can balance efficiency and convenience.

Proper Storage Techniques

Properly storing your firewood is key to ensuring it remains dry and effective for burning. Stack wood off the ground, covered with a tarp or stored in a wood shed with adequate airflow. This prevents moisture absorption and accelerates the drying process.

Keep your woodpile away from the house to reduce the risk of pests making their way indoors. If possible, store wood in a sunny, windy location, as exposure to these elements can further help the seasoning process. Well-stored wood not only burns better but also simplifies maintenance.
